Abrar's Research Work
Abrar's work entails investigating the structural insights of the slit diaphragm protein CD2AP and its interacting partners PODOCIN and NEPHRIN and understanding how these proteins interact to form the macromolecular complexes called the Slit diaphragm (SD). The crucial role of SD is in the filtration of blood and the formation of urine. In nephrotic syndrome, mutations in these SD proteins disrupt the macromolecular complex, leading to proteinuria nephrotic syndrome and eventually end-stage renal failure. Due to challenges in obtaining slit-diaphragm protein solutions, their structural information has been scant for decades.
